Located just a short distance from Shinjuku Gyoen National Gardenis a restaurant specializing in authentic Shanghai home-style cuisine!
In mid-November, my wife and I visited the Chrysanthemum Garden Exhibition at Shinjuku Gyoen.
We finished our tour just after 1:30 PM, so we looked for a place nearby to have a late lunch and spotted a promising Chinese restaurant.
That restaurant is “CHEF’S,” which I’m introducing today.

The restaurant is located along Hanazono Street, about a 5-minute walk from Shinjuku Gyoen.
Since it was late, the restaurant was relatively empty, and we were able to get in without waiting.

Lunch offers reasonably priced meals
The lunch menu was displayed outside the restaurant.
I thought it was a high-end restaurant, but it seems they offer reasonably priced lunches.
Everything looked delicious, but I ordered the Paikō rice bowl and my wife ordered the Hainan rice bowl.

This is delicious, light Chinese cuisine.
Since this restaurant specializes in Shanghai cuisine, I wondered what the flavor profile would be like. For Chinese food, it’s quite light and very tasty.
It has a refined Chinese cuisine feel to it, and I enjoyed every last bite.

The meal was so delicious that I ordered the almond jelly dessert as an extra.
The almond jelly was also superbly made, and I can see why it’s a bit pricey at 880 yen.
It was my first time visiting this restaurant, but I was so satisfied that I’d like to come back for dinner sometime.

About CHEF’S
CHEF’S is a Shanghainese home-style cuisine specialty restaurant offering casual lunches by day and dinners with an average customer spend exceeding ¥10,000.
Founded by the late Chef Wang Huiren, it established an “aesthetic of subtraction”—rooted in classical Chinese techniques yet restraining spices to sharpen the natural umami of ingredients.
While evenings draw gourmets seeking Shanghai crab and course meals, lunch offers an accessible price range. Popular dishes include the signature “Meat-Topped Fried Rice,” along with curry and various rice bowls.
Having dined there myself, I found every dish to be refined—never heavy, with a clean finish.
It truly is a renowned establishment that successfully combines the techniques of high-end Chinese cuisine with the approachability of lunch.
