From Hokkaido to Kagoshima, local ramen from various regions is booming.
In Hiroshima, where I used to live, there is a popular local ramen called “Onomichi Ramen.
This time, I would like to introduce “Onomichi Ramen Ichibankan,” which was featured in the Hiroshima edition of the Michelin Guide and opened a second store in Shinjuku Gyoenmae in 2020.
Please check the official website and the Google map at the bottom of this page for business hours, holidays, and reviews.

What is “Onomichi Ramen”?

Onomichi Ramen” is based on a clear broth made from chicken bones and broth made from small fish from the Seto Inland Sea combined with soy sauce, and is characterized by the minced back fat floating on the surface.

The name “Onomichi Ramen” seems to have been used since the early 1980s, but when I lived in Hiroshima, the overwhelmingly popular “Onomichi Ramen” was “Shuka-en,” which was started by Taiwanese-born Shu-A-Syun.

Memorable ramen for me as well.

Onomichi Ramen Ichibankan opened in March 1999, but it was a year before that that I had my first bowl of ramen at Onomichi Ramen Ichibankan.
I was transferred to Hiroshima by my company in April 1998, and there was something I really wanted to find in Onomichi, so I contacted Mr. Honpo Onomichiya, who had a website to promote Onomichi City (the website was already closed), and visited him at his home.
He told me that he was going to open a restaurant in the near future, and that I should try his ramen.
A year later, a store opened in Onomichi city, so I went to try it immediately and found that the taste of the soup was different from what I had tasted before.
It seemed much milder, so I asked, “Wouldn’t you prefer a slightly thicker, more impactful soup like before?
Onomichiya Honpo said, “We made it milder so that women can enjoy it as well.

Featured in the “Michelin Guide Hiroshima Special Edition”

“Onomichi Ramen Ichibankan” steadily gained fans, and with the closing of the aforementioned “Shukaen” in June 2019, it became a ramen restaurant representing Onomichi in both name and reality.
“Onomichi Ramen Ichibankan” became so popular that it was even listed in the Michelin Guide, reminding us once again that Onomichi Ya Honpo’s decision at the time was the right one.

The same taste as the main store in Onomichi is reproduced in Tokyo

Onomichi Ramen Ichibankan opened its second store in Shinjuku Gyoenmae in December 2020.

Although there are many restaurants that do not have a store in Onomichi but carry the sign “Onomichi Ramen,” Onomichi Ramen Ichibankan” sends staff from Onomichi to reproduce the same taste as you would get in the real Onomichi (prices in the images below are as of November 2022).

Onomichi Ramen Ichibankan’s ramen features slightly frizzled, flattened, aged, fresh noodles, and a soup based on pork and chicken bones, seafood, vegetable extracts, and spices, made with carefully selected soy sauce with a rich and deep flavor.
The soup is based on pork and chicken bones, with seafood, vegetable extracts and spices, and is made with carefully selected soy sauce that is rich and deep.
The soup also has plenty of pork back fat, a characteristic of “Onomichi Ramen,” floating in it, giving the soup a “rich” yet “light” taste.

Scenic Onomichi is a beautiful city with scenery that often appears in movies, and is a wonderful town that offers a good balance of sightseeing and eating, including sweets and ramen.
Onomichi Ramen, prepared with care by the staff of my favorite town, Onomichi, is an exquisite dish.
Of all the local ramen, Onomichi ramen has already become a national specialty, and why not try its authentic taste in Shinjuku Gyoenmae?
