Long-established tonkatsu restaurant representing Tokyo
Ginza Bairin opened in 1927 as the first tonkatsu specialty restaurant in Ginza.
The founder, Mr. Nobukatsu Shibuya, was a man of ideas and developed the restaurant by adding new ideas one after another, such as “Hitokubutsu (bite-sized cutlet),” which was a cutlet that had been opened in a single piece and deep-fried until then, and “Chuno Sauce (tonkatsu sauce),” which was unique to tonkatsu and suitable for tonkatsu.
Ginza Bairin has many celebrity fans, and the actor Kiyoshi Atsumi, known throughout Japan for his role as Tora-san (Torajiro Kuruma), the main character in the movie “Otoko wa Tsuraiyo,” is known to have been a patron of this restaurant.
It is the ultimate katsudon that transcends everything!
When I returned to Tokyo in 2022 from a long regional assignment, Ginza Bairin was the first place I went.
I couldn’t forget the taste of katsudon I had here when I was young.
It was raining on the day I visited, but there were about five people waiting for me, and I waited about 15 minutes.
I ordered the special katsudon (2,100 yen) because I am a filet mignon fan.
It would have been difficult for me to pay this price when I was younger, but now that I am older, I can afford to splurge a little (menu as of May 2022).
The special katsudon that was brought to the table in front of us, which was topped with an egg and then another egg, is a very special katsudon with a bright appearance.
When I tried it, I could not describe the indescribable taste of the softened batter soaked with sweet and spicy sauce, the superb fillet meat, and the half-boiled egg mixed together in my mouth.
When you get to this point, it is no longer about the ingredients, but has already reached the point where it is delicious as a single piece of food called katsudon.
The meat is 80 grams, which might have seemed a little insufficient when I was younger, but it is enough for me now.
I enjoyed it very much. Ginza Bairin is indeed a great restaurant!
Lunch boxes and filet mignon sandwiches available for take-out.
Ginza Bairin also offers a variety of to-go boxed lunches.
The original Hirekatsu Sandwich, Hirekatsu, Fried Shrimp, Kushikatsu, Menchikatsu, and other items are also available for take-out, and are recommended as souvenirs.
Ginza Bairin also has a booth in the Tokyo Chef’s Kitchen, a food court located on the first basement floor of Haneda Airport’s Terminal 1 building, and has expanded to Waikiki, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Seoul, and Taiwan in an effort to spread the traditional Japanese food culture of tonkatsu to the world.
We are also working hard to spread the Japanese food culture.
