Aomono-yokocho, a neighborhood with a mix of high-rise apartments and tower offices, is home to many restaurants.
This time, we would like to introduce “Unagi Marutomi”, a small eel restaurant with only a counter in Aomono-yokocho.
Please check the official website and Google Maps below for opening hours, holidays, reviews, etc.
The eel sticking out of the bowl really caught my eye!
After finishing work in the morning at Shinagawa Seaside, I looked for a restaurant in the area, but I couldn’t find one that suited me.
Looking at the map, I found that the Keikyu Aomono-yokocho Station was nearby, so I looked it up and found an eel restaurant that caught my eye.
That’s why I visited “Unagi Marutomi” in Minami-Shinagawa 3-chome.
What caught my eye was the size of the eel.
It seems that they only serve unadon for lunch, but from the pictures I saw online, the eel was completely sticking out of the bowl.
The unadon was even more impressive than the pictures on the internet!
There are four variations of unadon: “normal”, “double”, “large portion of rice” and “small portion of rice”, and I ordered the “normal” unadon.
The “normal” unadon that was brought in front of me was definitely not “normal”.
It had a thick, large eel (from Miyazaki Prefecture) that completely overflowed the bowl, just like the picture I had seen beforehand.
Compared to the steamed eel served in the Kanto style, this eel was grilled quite a bit, which was my favorite, and the unadon was a surprisingly cheap 3,050 yen (as of February 2023).
The exterior and interior of the restaurant looked like a quick-service soba noodle shop, and it was a small place with only 7 or 8 seats, but it was a special restaurant that served unadon with a large eel on top.
About Unagimarutomi
Unagi Marutomi is a long-established eel restaurant that was established in 1968.
The restaurant is small, with only a U-shaped counter, but it is constantly busy with customers.
It was also selected as one of the 100 best restaurants on Tabelog (2022), and although it is not a certain gyudon (beef bowl) chain, it is an eel restaurant that has all four of the following: delicious, fast, cheap, and huge!
There are quite a few eel restaurants in Tokyo that are considered to be reasonably priced, but considering that they use domestic eel and offer it at this price, I think they are one of the best in Tokyo.
If you visit this area, I would definitely recommend you try this eel restaurant.
