About the curry battle zone in Tokyo
The best curry battle zone in Tokyo is Kanda and Jimbocho
There are many areas in Tokyo that are known as curry battle zones, but the Kanda and Jimbocho area is known as the best battle zone in Tokyo.
This area is lined with famous curry restaurants, but when I was attending a cram school in Ochanomizu in the mid-1980s, I had never heard of this area being a “hotbed of curry restaurants”.
I became curious and did some research, and it seems that many of the shops that have become famous now were just starting out around this time.
Specifically, Bondi was founded in 1978, which was early, but other places like “Manten” (1981), “Gavial” (1982), “Mandala” (1985), “Ethiopia” (1988), ‘Topka’ (1994), ‘Kama’ (1995), and so on.
Tokyo is a curry paradise!
There are other areas in Tokyo that are known as curry battlegrounds.
Shimokitazawa, Shinjuku, Kichijoji and other areas saw a succession of curry restaurants opening in the late 1980s, riding the wave of the ethnic food boom and the subsequent soup curry boom.
