The first eel restaurant I visited after returning to Tokyo from Nagoya
When I went to Jiyugaoka with my family, we ate eel.
We went to a long-established eel restaurant called “Kabayaki Kappo Yazagawa”.
I had been living alone in Nagoya, which is known as the Mecca of eel, for eight years, but this was the first time I had visited an eel restaurant since returning to Tokyo.
We had a delicious, elegant eel meal!
We went there for the unajyu, but there are three types of unajyu, and the Matsutake and Take are different in terms of the quantity of eel, and the Special Selection is different in terms of both quantity and quality, so we ordered the Special Selection (6,050 yen) (as of May 2022).
The eel at “Kabayaki Kappo Yazagawa” was fluffy and had a delicious, high-quality flavor with a hint of charcoal.
The special selection was quite a large portion, but it was light and I enjoyed it all the way to the end.
I asked for more rice, and it was served in a way that allowed for the right amount of air to get in, so it wasn’t too hot and was easy to eat.
I know there are people who like their rice piping hot, but for me, I’m happier with it not being too hot, because if it’s too hot, you can’t really taste it.
About “Kabayaki Kappo Yazagawa
Kabayaki Kappo Yazagawa, which was founded in Todoroki, moved to Jiyugaoka in 1976, and has been there ever since.
The reason the name of the restaurant includes the word “kappo” is because the second generation owner was from Kansai kappo, and the menu features a wide range of dishes other than eel.
The rice used is “Miyuki rice” Koshihikari from Uonuma, and it goes perfectly with the eel.
Kabayaki Kappo Yazagawa has become the benchmark for eel restaurants in Tokyo, but after visiting several other restaurants, I realized that it was a very good restaurant.
The staff are friendly, and the restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere that makes you feel at home, without the high-class feel you might expect from an eel restaurant.
It seems to be a restaurant that is loved by the locals, and after visiting, I think I understand why.
