A winter tradition? A huge queue for the limited 50 oyster fry dishes!
I had some work to do near Tokyo Station, but I found a restaurant in Ningyocho that looked really good online, so I decided to stretch my legs a bit and go there.
That’s why I visited Kappo Sanyu in Nihonbashi Ningyocho.
I arrived at the restaurant at around 11:30, but there was already a queue of over 20 people when I got there.

After waiting for about an hour, I was finally able to get into the restaurant!
I had given up on the idea of waiting in line because there were so many people, but then I thought to myself, “Wait a minute, if there’s such a long line, it must be delicious!
When you’re in line, the staff come to take your order, and they asked me if I wanted two or three oyster fries and what size of rice I wanted (the prices are as of February 14, 2025).

After waiting for about an hour, I was finally able to enter the restaurant.
I had imagined regular fried oysters, so I ordered three without hesitation, but I found out that there was also the option of two when I actually tried them.
About 10 minutes after I sat down, the fried oysters were brought to my table.

The size is huge! You’ll be surprised at how big the fried oysters are!
You’ll be surprised at how big the fried oysters are when you see them.
Sometimes you can find bomb-shaped rice balls at convenience stores, but these fried oysters really do look like bomb-shaped fried oysters (it seems that regular customers call them that).

I wondered what kind of oyster it was and what it would taste like, so I took a bite.
It didn’t taste bland at all, but was juicy and full of flavor.
I asked the shop owner if they used such large oysters, and he said, “We use six oysters today.”
I see, that’s how it is. That’s why it was big but not bland, and juicy and plump.

After actually eating them and seeing them, I finally understood why I was asked if I wanted two or three when I ordered.
Because they were the size of a baseball, even if you ordered two, they still contained 12 oysters, so they were very filling.
The secret story behind the birth of the bomb oyster fry
I was curious about how the bomb oyster fry, which you can’t find at other restaurants, came about, so I did some research and found the following description on a website
“About five years after we opened, the president of an oyster farm in Hiroshima happened to come to eat at our restaurant and asked if we would use his oysters. When we agreed, we started receiving 5kg of oysters every day. At first we were frying them one by one, but there were so many that we couldn’t keep up with them all.” This is how the current recipe of frying multiple oysters together came about.
The one and only bomb oyster fry was born in this way, and it has since gained the tremendous support of many oyster fry lovers.
It is a very popular restaurant, so you may have to wait for about an hour, but it is oyster fry that is worth waiting for.
