There are many curry restaurants in the Kanda/Jimbocho area, which is Tokyo’s most competitive curry district, but there are also several famous restaurants that have been popular since the early days.
This time we will introduce one of the representative restaurants, “European-style Curry GAVIAL”.

Jimbocho was not a curry battleground in the past.
I had some work to do in Ochanomizu, and as it was just about lunchtime, I decided to look for a place to eat.
Ochanomizu, where I spent a year as a ronin, was a turning point in my life.
If I hadn’t attended the Sundai Preparatory School here, I don’t think I would have passed Waseda University, where everyone said, “You’ll never get in.”
Ochanomizu is a place with such memories, but at the time I had never gone out to eat anywhere except the cafeteria at Meiji University (I didn’t have any money…).
When I was looking for a restaurant this time, I noticed for the first time that there are many curry specialty restaurants in this area.
From what I found out on the internet, the number of curry restaurants in the area has increased rapidly since I entered university, and it seems to have become known as a holy place for curry.
A unique curry with a depth of flavor that belies its sweetness
I suddenly became interested in this area, which is known for its fierce curry battles, and searched for a restaurant on my mobile phone.
That’s how I ended up at “European-style Curry GAVIAL”, which is located near Jimbocho Station.
It was a little past lunchtime, so it wasn’t full, but there were quite a few customers.
I ordered the beef curry (1,600 yen) after looking at the menu, but the curry that was brought to me came with potatoes and butter served separately (price as of July 2022).
You can eat it in curry or on its own, but I tore it into small pieces and added it to the curry.
I chose the medium-spicy option, but it was much sweeter than I expected.
In a nutshell, this curry is sweet and ordinary, but it’s a flavor you can’t get at home.
It was a type of curry that people might have different opinions about, but it was very delicious with a depth of flavor despite its sweetness, and I wanted to come back again.
